Produktionsniveauet, or the production level, refers to the amount of output a production system achieves at a given time. In economics and operations management it describes how much is actually produced relative to what could be produced with the available resources, technology, and capacity. It can be considered at the firm level or for a broader economy.

Two common representations are the absolute level of output and the utilization rate. The utilization rate is calculated as actual output divided by potential output during a period, multiplied by 100. Potential output reflects the maximum sustainable production given the current capital stock, labor, and technology, excluding temporary constraints. In practice, firms measure production level in units produced, hours operated, or value of output.

Production level is influenced by several factors, including demand conditions, input costs, productivity, maintenance needs, and supply chain reliability. It can also be affected by seasonality, technology changes, and strategic decisions about workforce levels, overtime, or capital investments. Downtime, quality issues, and disruptions reduce the actual level relative to potential.

At the macro level, the rate of production utilization serves as an indicator of economic activity and capacity slack. A high production level suggests strong demand and rising utilization, which can influence prices and investment, while low utilization points to underused capacity. For organizations, managing the production level involves production planning, inventory control, and capacity decisions to match demand and optimize costs.
