Processtrømmen, or the process stream, is a conceptual depiction of how inputs move through a process to become outputs. It is used across manufacturing, logistics, and information systems to describe the flow of materials, energy, data, and control signals from initiation to completion. Processes can be continuous or discrete, and streams can be sequential or parallel, often subject to constraints and feedback loops.

Key elements include inputs (materials, energy, and information), transformation steps (operations, machining, assembly, or software processing), outputs (products, waste, and data), and control mechanisms (sensors, controllers, and decision logic). Data streams feed the process, enabling monitoring and optimization.

Common representations include process flow diagrams (PFD), value stream mapping, piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID), and data pipelines. Digital tools such as simulation, digital twins, and Lean methodologies study the processtrømmen to improve throughput, reduce inventory, and minimize cycle time.

Applications span chemical plants and refineries, food production, logistics networks, and IT systems. Challenges involve variability, reliability, safety, and regulatory compliance, as well as synchronization between parallel streams and energy efficiency.
