procarcinogens
A procarcinogen is a substance that is not carcinogenic in its original form but can be converted into a carcinogen after undergoing metabolic processes within the body. These metabolic activations often occur in the liver or other tissues, where enzymes transform the procarcinogen into a reactive metabolite. This activated metabolite, known as a proximate carcinogen, can then interact with cellular DNA, leading to mutations. If these mutations affect genes that control cell growth and division, they can initiate the process of cancer development.
Many procarcinogens are found in the environment and in our diet. For example, certain compounds in tobacco
