Instead, they determine their fees based on a professional fee schedule, the Gebührenordnung für Ärzte (GOÄ), which allows for a wider range of service pricing depending on complexity and time. This can lead to higher costs for patients compared to services covered by GKV.

The privatärztliche system offers several potential advantages for patients. These can include shorter waiting times for appointments, greater physician choice, and access to a broader spectrum of diagnostic and therapeutic options that may not be fully covered by statutory insurance.
