Primäärivärisettejä are sets of colors considered fundamental, from which other colors can theoretically be mixed. The specific colors included in a primäärivärisette depend on the color model being used.

In subtractive color models, such as those used in printing and pigment mixing, the primary colors are typically cyan, magenta, and yellow (CMY). When these colors are mixed, they absorb (subtract) certain wavelengths of light. Mixing cyan and magenta, for example, produces blue. Mixing all three subtractive primaries in theory results in black, though in practice a darker shade of gray or brown is often achieved. Black (K) is often included in printing systems as CMYK to achieve deeper blacks and save on ink usage.

In additive color models, such as those used for light on screens and displays, the primary colors are red, green, and blue (RGB). These colors add light together. Mixing red and green light produces yellow. Mixing all three additive primaries at full intensity results in white light.

The concept of primary colors is not absolute and has evolved with scientific understanding. Historically, red, yellow, and blue were often considered the primary colors in art education, based on pigment mixing. However, modern understanding of light and pigment behavior has led to the CMY and RGB models being more scientifically accurate for their respective applications.
