Pretheoretical is an adjective used in philosophy, cognitive science, and related fields to denote beliefs, judgments, or modes of understanding that precede, or lie outside, formal theory. The term derives from Latin prae- “before” and theoreticus “theoretical.” In everyday usage it refers to common-sense or intuitive understandings that are not yet organized into systematic explanations.

In philosophy of science and epistemology, pretheoretical judgments are the suppositions people bring to observation before constructing models or hypotheses. In phenomenology, the idea of the pretheoretical or natural attitude describes the default stance in which the world is given to consciousness prior to reflective analysis. Observations, objects, and meanings are experienced as they appear, without explicit theoretical interpretation.

The notion is debated. Some scholars argue that perception and cognition are always partly theory-laden, so the pretheoretical is an idealization. Others view pretheoretical considerations as a legitimate stage in inquiry, helping to ground arguments in ordinary experience or intuitive reasoning. The concept is sometimes used in education to distinguish raw, pretheoretical questions from those requiring formal theory, and in ethics to discuss pretheoretical commitments that shape reasoning.

Related terms include naive realism, common sense, and preconceptions. The label is often used as a descriptive contrast to theoretical frameworks, while also serving as a critical tool for examining the foundations of judgment and interpretation.
