Premetamorphosis is a developmental stage in the life cycle of certain animals, most notably amphibians like frogs and salamanders. It is the period following hatching and preceding the onset of metamorphosis. During premetamorphosis, the larva undergoes significant growth and development of its basic body plan but has not yet begun the dramatic transformations associated with metamorphosis.

In amphibians, a premetamorphic larva typically resembles a tadpole. It possesses external or internal gills for respiration, a tail for locomotion, and a mouth adapted for feeding on aquatic vegetation or small organisms. The digestive system is developing, and the nervous system is becoming more complex. Limb buds may be present but are not yet prominent. The animal is primarily focused on growth and accumulating the energy reserves needed for the subsequent metamorphic stage.

The duration of premetamorphosis varies widely depending on the species, environmental conditions such as temperature and food availability, and the overall size of the animal. This stage is crucial as it establishes the foundation for the drastic changes that will occur later. Hormonal signals initiate the transition from premetamorphosis to the metamorphic stage, marking the beginning of the breakdown of larval structures and the development of adult features.
