Preformati is a term used to describe components produced in a preliminary form that serves as the starting point for a final part in various manufacturing industries. A preform is manufactured to preserve precise composition, geometry, and sometimes microstructure, so that the subsequent forming or finishing step yields a consistent final product. The concept is widely applied when scaling up production or when engineering internal properties such as material distribution or porosity.

In optics and communications, preforms are most commonly associated with optical fiber production. Silica-based preforms are created with carefully controlled dopant profiles to establish a desired refractive-index structure. Techniques such as chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and related methods build the preform as a long cylinder, which is later heated and drawn into long lengths of optical fiber. The quality and uniformity of the preform directly influence the performance of the fiber.

In packaging and consumer products, polymer preforms are used for blow-molded bottles. PET preforms are injection-molded with the basic bottle geometry and then heated and blown into final containers. This approach enables efficient storage, transportation, and manufacturing flexibility for different bottle shapes and sizes.

Preforms also appear in metal and ceramic processing and in composite fabrication. Preforms can be pressed or shaped to form green bodies, which are then sintered or fused to become final ceramic or metal components. In all cases, the preform stage aims to improve dimensional control, material quality, and production efficiency, while introducing additional processing steps and potential defect risks that must be managed.
