prefixont

Prefixont is a hypothetical class of bound morphemes in linguistic morphology. It is defined as a prefix that attaches to nominal stems and encodes information about the ontological status or epistemic stance of the referent. Unlike prefixes that modify meaning through aspect, number, or definiteness, a prefixont signals whether the referent is asserted to exist in reality, is known to the speaker, is inferred from evidence, or is treated as a conventional term within discourse. The term prefixont is a blend of “prefix” and “ontology” and was coined in theoretical discussions of morphology in the early 2020s.

Morphology and semantics

A prefixont typically occupies the left edge of a noun and interacts with determiners, adjectives, and numerals
