Preencounter is a term used in sociology and psychology to describe the initial stage of a process of identity development or consciousness raising. It represents a state where an individual may not be fully aware of, or may be actively resistant to, the social and political realities that shape their experiences. In this phase, individuals may internalize dominant societal norms and values, potentially leading to a lack of critical consciousness regarding their own oppression or the systemic nature of inequality.

This stage is often characterized by a lack of awareness or a denial of the significance of group identity, such as race, gender, or class. Individuals in the preencounter stage might believe in a "colorblind" society, or attribute disparities to individual merit or failings rather than systemic factors. They may also actively seek to assimilate into the dominant culture, distancing themselves from their own group identity, or may feel a sense of shame or inferiority associated with it. The preencounter stage is the precursor to subsequent stages in various identity development models, where individuals begin to question their existing beliefs and develop a more critical understanding of their social position. It is a point of departure from which a journey towards a more empowered and informed identity can begin.
