Precoats are preliminary coating layers applied to a surface before the main coating or treatment, with the goal of improving adhesion, protection, or surface quality. They can also refer to a pre-applied layer in filtration processes that forms the base for subsequent filtration.

In metal finishing, precoats often take the form of conversion coatings or primers. Phosphate or chromate conversion coatings are applied to metal surfaces to enhance corrosion resistance and promote better adhesion for paints or electroplating. Epoxy or acrylic primers may be used as precoats to seal the surface and even out roughness before the final coating.

In filtration, a precoat is a slurry or sorbent layer deposited onto a filter media to create a stable, porous surface that captures particles during operation. Common precoats include diatomaceous earth, cellulose, or polymer suspensions, which are applied before the liquid to be filtered passes through.

In wood, plastics, and automotive coatings, precoats can refer to sealers or primers that prepare the surface for the topcoat, reducing absorbency, preventing staining, and improving uniformity of color and sheen.

Process considerations for precoats include compatibility with the substrate and topcoat, proper curing or drying, application thickness, and regulatory constraints related to materials such as hexavalent chromium or volatile organic compounds. While precoats can improve performance and durability, they add processing steps, cost, and potential environmental impacts if not managed properly.
