The Czech term *pozorovatelství* refers to an astronomical observatory, a place equipped with telescopes and instruments for the systematic observation of celestial objects. An observatory typically houses one or more telescopes—optical, radio, infrared, or ultraviolet—along with supporting facilities such as control rooms, data processing centers, and sometimes public outreach programs.

Observatories are classified by the wavelength of light they observe. Optical observatories focus on visible light and often include large refracting or reflecting telescopes. Radio observatories use dishes and array systems to detect radio waves emitted by distant galaxies, pulsars, and the cosmic microwave background. Infrared observatories, some located in high‑altitude deserts or on Mount Mauna Kea, capture heat radiation that passes through interstellar dust. Space‑based observatories, like the Hubble Space Telescope or the James Webb Space Telescope, operate above Earth’s atmosphere to avoid atmospheric distortion and absorption.

The history of observatories dates back to the sixteenth century with early European establishments such as the Biltmore and Staudinger observatories. Modern facilities, such as the Very Large Telescope in Chile and the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico (before its collapse), have enabled breakthroughs in exoplanet detection, cosmology, and the study of dark matter.

Many observatories also serve an educational role, offering public viewing nights and interactive exhibits to promote science literacy. The term *pozorovatelství* is therefore not only a technical description of a scientific site but also represents the broader endeavor of humanity to observe and understand the cosmos.
