powinno

Powinno is the neuter singular form of the Polish modal expression powinnien/powinna/powinno, used to express obligation, advisability, or expectation. It functions as the finite predicate in sentences with a neuter subject or in impersonal constructions, and it is commonly followed by an infinitive or by the adjective or participle in a predicative position.

In everyday Polish, powinno appears most often in clauses where the subject is neuter or in impersonal statements. It can combine with a form of być to yield predicates such as "to powinno być ..." (that should be ...), or it can introduce a predicative with an adjective or a past participle, as in "To powinno być jasne" (That should be clear) and "To powinno być możliwe" (That should be possible). It can also appear with a passive-like construction: "To powinno zostać zrobione" (This should be done).

Powinno is also used in impersonal constructions with się to express general obligation or recommendation: "Powinno się dbać o zdrowie" (One should take care of one’s health). In such uses, the form remains neuter and does not reflect a specific gender of a subject.

Difference from other forms of powi—the masculine form powinien and the feminine powinna is gender-marked and refers to a specific subject (he should, she should). Powinno, by contrast, is used for neuter subjects or impersonal statements and tends to appear in formal, instructional, or normative contexts.
