Potassiumaluminum refers to chemical species that contain both potassium (K) and aluminum (Al). It is not a single compound but a family of compounds, including potassium aluminum sulfate (potassium alum), with the formula KAl(SO4)2·12H2O, and related salts such as potassium aluminate (KAlO2 or KAl(OH)4).

Potassium alum is the most well known member. It is a hydrated double salt of potassium and aluminum that crystallizes as colorless crystals. In water, it dissociates to give aluminum and potassium ions and acts as a coagulant and clarifying agent. Historically it has been used as a mordant in textile dyeing and as an astringent in cosmetics and medicine, as well as in some water-purification processes.

Potassium aluminate forms under strongly alkaline conditions from aluminum-containing materials and potassium compounds. In solution it exists as aluminate species such as [Al(OH)4]−, and solid forms such as KAlO2 can be prepared by treating alumina or aluminum hydroxide with potassium compounds. Potassium aluminates are used in water treatment as coagulants and in cementitious applications as additives that influence setting and workability.

Other potassium-aluminum salts exist, including potassium hexafluoroaluminate (K3AlF6), a synthetic salt related to cryolite. Fluorinated aluminates have been used as fluxes or electrolyte additives in aluminum processing, where they help modify the melting behavior of alumina and the efficiency of electrolysis.

Occurrence and production are primarily industrial. These compounds are produced by chemical reactions between aluminum- or alumina-containing materials and potassium salts, often in aqueous solution or molten phases. Natural minerals containing potassium and aluminum (such as alunite) are related but distinct from the defined potassium aluminum salts.

Safety considerations center on standard handling of aluminum salts. Concentrated solutions can irritate skin and eyes, and prolonged exposure to aluminum compounds has raised health concerns, so appropriate safety measures are advised.
