Postsmoothing is a post-processing step in which a smoothing operator is applied to a result after an initial computation, reconstruction, or filtering step. The aim is to reduce remaining high-frequency noise, oscillations, or artifacts without substantially distorting the underlying signal or structure.

In numerical methods, postsmoothing is a standard component of multigrid solvers. After a coarse-grid correction, smoothing iterations are applied on the fine grid to damp high-frequency error components, influencing convergence speed and numerical stability. In image and video processing, postsmoothing may follow deconvolution or restoration procedures to soften ringing, speckle, or reconstruction artifacts and improve visual quality. In time-series analysis and statistical estimation, post-processing smoothing can stabilize fluctuating estimates or measurements.

Common techniques for postsmoothing include low-pass filters such as Gaussian blur, moving-average or Savitzky-Golay filters, as well as diffusion-based or anisotropic smoothing methods. The choice of technique and parameters—such as kernel size, filter strength, or number of iterations—depends on the data characteristics and the desired balance between noise suppression and detail preservation.

Trade-offs are a key consideration: smoothing reduces noise and artifacts but can introduce bias and blur fine features. Computational cost and potential over-smoothing are also important factors in determining the appropriate postsmoothing strategy for a given application.
