Etymologically, it combines post- with ritual, signaling timing after the rite and the continuation of its meaning into daily life.

In practice, postritual concerns how participants interpret the experience, reintegrate with the community, and enact the ritual’s outcomes. It includes memory formation, the assignment or reinforcement of social roles, and the negotiation of norms that the ritual expressed or tested. Some theorists see postritual as the phase in rites of passage where newly empowered individuals are reintroduced into the social order, following liminal ambiguity.

Characteristically, postritual activity can be quiet and reflective, such as storytelling and contemplation, or communal and demonstrative, such as feasting, procession, or rites of commemoration.
