Postposisyonel, or postpositional in linguistic terms, describes a class of languages that express grammatical relations through postpositions or particles that follow the noun or noun phrase rather than preceding it. In these systems, markers that indicate case, location, direction, instrument, time, possession, or other relations appear after the noun, functioning similarly to prepositions in languages like English but with the form and placement after the noun.

In a typical postpositional language, a noun phrase is followed by one or more postpositions. These elements can be separate words or clitics attached to the noun or to the noun phrase, and they convey relationships such as “in,” “on,” “to,” “from,” or “with.” The exact realization varies across languages, but the defining trait is the postnominal position of the relational marker as opposed to being before or surrounding the noun.

Postpositional languages are contrasted with prepositional languages, where relational markers precede or are independent words before the noun (as in English “in the house”). Well-known examples of postpositional systems include Japanese and Korean, where particles attach to nouns to indicate grammatical relations. Other languages around East Asia, parts of Africa and the Pacific, and some language families exhibit postpositional characteristics, sometimes alongside other marker strategies. The typology of postpositionality intersects with word order, case marking, and discourse pragmatics, and it informs broader theories of how languages encode argument structure and relational meaning.
