Postliberation is a term used in political science, history, and cultural studies to describe the period following the success of a liberation movement or the attainment of formal emancipation within a society. It denotes the transitional phase in which new political authorities, social groups, and institutions attempt to consolidate power, define nationhood, and address the legacies of oppression, colonization, or exploitation. The concept is applied to contexts such as decolonization, post-revolution states, and other movements that achieve legal or political victory but confront ongoing governance challenges and legitimacy concerns.

Scholars examine issues of state-building, constitutional design, party formation, civil-military relations, and the creation or reform of public services. Economic development, land and resource reform, transitional justice, truth-seeking, and memory politics are also central. In cultural analysis, postliberation narratives explore how societies move beyond celebratory accounts of liberation to address post-conflict realities, everyday life, corruption, and governance.

The term is not uniform; its scope and tone vary by region and theoretical approach. Some analyses emphasize democratization and liberalization in the aftermath of liberation, while others stress continuities with prior power structures or new forms of authoritarianism. Critics caution against teleological readings that imply a clean break between liberation and postliberation order.
