postillio
The term "postillio" or "postilion" refers to a person who rides the left-hand horse of a team, especially when a carriage is not carrying a coachman. This rider, also known as a postilion rider, guides the horses and controls the vehicle. Historically, postilions were common in Europe, particularly from the 17th century onwards, before the widespread use of carriages with a driver's seat. They were essential for the operation of stagecoaches and private carriages, especially in situations where the coachman might be needed elsewhere or when a more direct control of the horses was desired.
The role of a postilion required significant skill in horsemanship and a deep understanding of animal behavior.
