Postexchange refers to the retail network on United States military installations that serves service members and their families. It is commonly known as the PX and includes on-base stores and related services that provide a range of goods and conveniences.

The Post Exchange system is organized by service, with principal entities including the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) for Army and Air Force facilities, the Navy Exchange Service Command (NEXCOM) for Navy stores, and the Marine Corps Exchange (MCX) for Marine Corps bases. On overseas and joint bases, operation may involve similar or adapted structures. The network sells clothing, electronics, household goods, groceries, and other merchandise, and often includes restaurants, gas stations, and online shopping. Profits from exchanges are reinvested to support Morale, Welfare, and Recreation programs and to benefit service members and families.

History and scope: The post exchange concept emerged to provide on-base retail with revenue directed toward base welfare programs. Over time it expanded from small shops to large department-store–style facilities, incorporating digital storefronts and global operations to serve personnel at home and abroad.

Access and eligibility: Use of post exchanges is typically restricted to active-duty personnel, retirees, National Guard and Reserve members, and their eligible dependents, with some bases extending access to other authorized patrons such as certain civilian employees and contractors. Guests may shop on some installations under specific rules.
