Posarse is a Spanish reflexive verb that primarily means to rest, lean on, or settle upon a surface or a position. It is derived from Latin positus, the past participle of posuere, and is related to the non‑reflexive verb poner (to put). Synonyms include apoyarse, asentarse, y asentarse, each with slightly different connotations about the nature of the rest or support.

In everyday language, posarse often describes how an object, animal, or person comes to rest. For example, “La caja se posó en la mesa” (the box settled on the table) or “El gato se posó sobre la cortina” (the cat perched on the curtain). In such contexts the action is usually spontaneous or the result of gravity or a lack of support elsewhere.

In more figurative or idiomatic usage, posarse can refer to a person taking a stance or assuming a particular role. For instance, “El político se posó en la posición de contraindicación en el debate” (the politician adopted a contrary stance in the debate). This sense is more common in sports, particularly football (soccer), where a player might “posarse” (settle) near the goal line, waiting for an opportunity.

The verb also finds use in technical descriptions. Engineers may write that “El marco capacitado se posó sobre la superficie de la pared” when discussing how a frame contacts a wall. In construction and architecture, posarse can describe the way a structural element rests upon another.

While posarse is less common than its non‑reflexive counterpart poner, it remains useful for indicating solidity and contact: a thing or person that has found a stable position on or near something else.
