Porównawcza is the feminine singular form of the Polish adjective porównawczy, meaning “comparative” or “relating to comparison.” In Polish grammar it is used to describe nouns in phrases such as forma porównawcza or konstrukcja porównawcza, referring to the grammatical category of comparison rather than to a specific word.

The term is closely tied to stopień porównawczy, the “comparative degree” used to express a higher or lower degree of a quality. Polish forms the comparative either synthetically—with suffixes such as -szy and -niejszy (ładny → ładniejszy; duży → większy; stary → starszy)—or analytically—with more complex modifiers in set phrases (bardziej szybki, mniej interesujący). Some adjectives have irregular comparatives (dobry → lepszy; zły → gorszy). The feminine form porównawcza agrees with feminine nouns in such phrases.

Besides adjectives, there is an adverbial counterpart porównawczo meaning “comparatively,” which modifies verbs or adjectives in a sentence.
