Portastudios are portable, self-contained multitrack recording devices that combine a mixer, a tape transport, and input channels into a single unit. They were designed to enable multi-track recording outside of a traditional studio, typically using cassette tapes. The term originated with the Tascam Portastudio line in the late 1970s and was soon used more broadly for similar cassette-based multitrackers from other manufacturers.

Typically, portastudios offer four or more recording tracks on a compact chassis, with built-in microphone and line inputs, a small mixer, and monitoring options such as headphones or speakers. The user can overdub multiple parts by recording onto separate tracks while listening to a mix, then perform a final stereo mix, often by bouncing tracks within the unit or onto unused tape. Some models include built-in effects, equalization, and panning controls to shape the final sound.

The impact of portastudios was cultural and practical: they democratized music production by providing an affordable, portable means to create full, multi-layered recordings at home or on the go. They brought the practice of demoing songs outside of professional facilities and lowered the barrier to entry for aspiring musicians. Limitations include the constraints of cassette tape, such as limited track counts, tape hiss, headroom, and format-dependent noise, which affect fidelity and flexibility compared to larger studio setups.
