Populációdivergencia refers to the process by which populations of a species become reproductively isolated from each other. This isolation can occur due to various factors, leading to the accumulation of genetic differences over time. Ultimately, if these differences become significant enough, the populations may no longer be able to interbreed and produce fertile offspring, marking the formation of new species.

The initial step in populációdivergencia is typically the separation of a population into two or more geographically isolated groups. This geographical barrier, such as mountains, rivers, or oceans, prevents gene flow between the populations. Over generations, each isolated population will experience different selective pressures from its environment, leading to adaptations that are unique to that particular habitat. Random genetic drift, the chance fluctuation of gene frequencies, also plays a role in accumulating genetic differences.

As genetic differences accumulate, reproductive isolating mechanisms begin to evolve. These mechanisms can be prezygotic, preventing mating or fertilization, or postzygotic, reducing the viability or fertility of hybrid offspring. Prezygotic mechanisms include changes in mating behavior, physical incompatibilities, or different breeding seasons. Postzygotic mechanisms can result in hybrid inviability, where the hybrid offspring do not survive, or hybrid sterility, where the hybrid offspring are infertile. When these isolating mechanisms become strong enough, the two populations are considered to be reproductively isolated and have diverged into distinct species.
