Poppetventiler, also known as poppet valves, are a type of valve commonly used in internal combustion engines and other mechanical systems. They are characterized by a disc-shaped poppet that moves linearly within a valve guide. This poppet seals against a valve seat, which is typically a conical or flat surface machined into the valve body. When the poppet is lifted off its seat, it opens a port, allowing fluid or gas to pass through. When it is returned to its seat, it closes the port, preventing flow.

The operation of poppet valves is usually actuated by a camshaft. The camshaft, driven by the engine's crankshaft, has lobes that push on a tappet or rocker arm, which in turn lifts the valve stem. A spring is typically used to hold the poppet against the valve seat when the camshaft is not exerting force. The timing and duration of valve opening are critical for the efficient operation of engines.
