Ponoování is the act of submerging or immersing an object or body into a liquid. It can be intentional or part of a processing step, and it is used in everyday language as well as in scientific, engineering, and industrial contexts. Ponoření can refer to simple immersion in water, soaking in a bath, or more controlled submersion in chemical, galvanic, or cooling baths.

Etymology and terminology: the term derives from the Czech verb ponořit, meaning to submerge or dip. The noun ponoování denotes the process, while ponor has several related uses, for example as the draft of a vessel (the depth to which a ship sits in the water) in naval contexts. Ponoření is contrasted with potápění (diving) or potopení (sinking), where the latter emphasizes a transition to submerged state or active sinking.

Applications and contexts: in science and industry, ponoování describes placing objects into liquids for cleaning, coating, testing, or chemical treatment. Immersion baths or ponořovací lázně are common in metallurgical finishing, electronics, biotechnology, and material testing. In electronics and data centers, immersion cooling uses liquids to submerge components for heat removal. In everyday life, ponoování appears in phrases like ponořit prst do vody (to dip a finger into water) or ponořit potraviny do těstíčka.

Physical principles: immersion is governed by buoyancy according to Archimedes’ principle. The depth of immersion depends on the density of the object relative to the liquid, its orientation, and any applied ballast or restraints. Partial immersion results from balance of forces, while complete immersion occurs when density exceeds that of the liquid.
