Ponnahdusilmiö, often translated as "pop-up phenomenon" or "booming", refers to a rapid and often unexpected increase in the population of a specific species, particularly in aquatic environments. This phenomenon is typically characterized by a sudden, explosive growth phase followed by a subsequent decline. The term is frequently used in limnology and oceanography to describe the bloom of phytoplankton.

These blooms are usually triggered by favorable environmental conditions. Key factors include increased nutrient availability, such as nitrates and phosphates, which can be supplied by runoff from land or upwelling from deeper waters. Optimal light conditions and suitable water temperatures also play a crucial role in supporting rapid reproduction. The rapid multiplication of phytoplankton forms the base of the food web, supporting zooplankton and subsequently larger organisms.

However, ponnahdusilmiö is not always beneficial. Excessive nutrient enrichment, often caused by human activities like agricultural runoff and wastewater discharge, can lead to eutrophication and harmful algal blooms (HABs). These HABs can deplete dissolved oxygen in the water, creating hypoxic zones that are detrimental to fish and other aquatic life. Some algal blooms also produce toxins that can harm wildlife and even humans. The term can also be applied more broadly to rapid population increases in other organisms, though its primary association is with plankton.
