pomelo

Pomelo (Citrus maxima, also known as Citrus grandis) is a large citrus fruit native to Southeast Asia. It is one of the earliest citrus species and a progenitor of many cultivated citrus varieties. In some regions it is also referred to as shaddock.

The tree is evergreen and typically grows to 5–15 meters in height. The fruit is large, often 10–15 cm in diameter, with a thick rind that is green to yellow when ripe. The flesh ranges from pale yellow to pink and is divided into juicy, removable segments. The flavor is sweet to mildly tart, and the fruit is generally less acidic than grapefruit.

Varieties include white-fleshed and pink-fleshed types, with both seeded and seedless cultivars. Pomelo is eaten fresh and can be added to fruit salads, desserts, or used as a garnish. The rind and pith can be candied or zested; juice is used less often than other citrus.

Native to Southeast Asia, pomelo is grown in many parts of Asia and the Middle East, with major production in China, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, and India. It is also grown in parts of the Caribbean and the Americas. Harvest seasons vary by region, typically late autumn through winter. Trees prefer warm, humid climates and well-drained soil and can be susceptible to pests and diseases.

Nutrition and storage: Pomelo is relatively low in calories and a good source of vitamin C and dietary fiber. Whole fruit can be stored at cool room temperature for several days or refrigerated for longer shelf life. The thick rind and bitter white pith are typically discarded.
