Polysulfone is a family of high-performance amorphous thermoplastics. These polymers are characterized by the presence of sulfone groups (-SO2-) in their backbone structure, linking aromatic rings. This unique chemical structure imparts desirable properties such as high thermal stability, good mechanical strength, and excellent chemical resistance. Polysulfones typically exhibit a glass transition temperature above 150°C, allowing them to maintain their structural integrity at elevated temperatures. They are generally transparent or translucent with a light amber to yellow color.

Common applications for polysulfones include components in the automotive and aerospace industries, medical devices due to their sterilizability and biocompatibility, and food processing equipment where resistance to heat and chemicals is crucial. They are also used in water filtration membranes, electrical connectors, and cookware. Polysulfones can be processed using conventional thermoplastic techniques such as injection molding and extrusion. While generally good, their resistance to certain organic solvents can be a limitation in some environments.
