Polysulfone is a family of high-performance amorphous thermoplastics. These polymers are characterized by the presence of sulfone groups (-SO2-) in their molecular backbone, which contribute to their desirable properties. Polysulfones are known for their excellent thermal stability, retaining their mechanical properties at elevated temperatures. They also exhibit good chemical resistance, particularly to acids, bases, and many organic solvents, although they can be susceptible to attack by some polar organic solvents like ketones and halogenated hydrocarbons.

The material is inherently transparent and has a light amber color. Polysulfones are recognized for their high strength and stiffness, along with good dimensional stability and low creep. Their electrical insulating properties are also noteworthy. They are resistant to hydrolysis and can withstand repeated steam sterilization, making them suitable for medical and food contact applications.

Common applications for polysulfones include components in the automotive and aerospace industries, electrical connectors, membranes for water purification and dialysis, cookware, and medical devices. They can be processed using standard thermoplastic techniques such as injection molding and extrusion.
