Polüstüroeenvaht, commonly known as polystyrene foam or Styrofoam, is a lightweight rigid cellular plastic foam material. It is produced from polystyrene and is composed of around 98% air, making it an excellent insulator. The manufacturing process involves expanding polystyrene beads in the presence of a blowing agent, which creates tiny gas bubbles within the material. These bubbles are what give it its insulating properties.

Polüstüroeenvaht is widely used in construction for thermal insulation of walls, roofs, and floors. Its low thermal conductivity helps to reduce energy consumption for heating and cooling buildings. In packaging, it is used to protect fragile items during transport due to its shock-absorbing qualities and lightweight nature. It is also found in disposable cups, food containers, and craft applications.

While beneficial for its insulation and protective properties, polüstüroeenvaht presents environmental challenges. It is not readily biodegradable and can persist in the environment for hundreds of years. Recycling efforts are in place, but the low density of the material makes transportation for recycling costly. Research is ongoing to develop more sustainable alternatives and improve recycling processes for this versatile material.
