Polümetakrülaati refers to polymers derived from methacrylic acid or its esters. The most common and well-known example is poly(methyl methacrylate) or PMMA, often known by trade names such as Plexiglas or Lucite. PMMA is a transparent thermoplastic known for its clarity, toughness, and weather resistance. It is a strong alternative to glass, being lighter and less prone to shattering.

The synthesis of polymethacrylates typically involves free-radical polymerization of methacrylate monomers. This process can be carried out in various ways, including bulk polymerization, solution polymerization, suspension polymerization, and emulsion polymerization, each yielding materials with slightly different properties. The properties of polymethacrylates can be widely varied by altering the ester group of the methacrylate monomer. For instance, polymers made from longer chain alcohols will have lower glass transition temperatures and increased flexibility.

Polymethacrylates find extensive applications due to their versatile properties. PMMA, in particular, is used in a wide range of products, including automotive taillights, aircraft windows, eyeglasses, signage, and architectural glazing. It is also used in medical applications, such as bone cement and intraocular lenses. Other polymethacrylates are used as components in paints, coatings, adhesives, and impact modifiers for other plastics. Their resistance to UV radiation and weathering makes them suitable for outdoor use, and their optical clarity is a significant advantage in many transparent applications.
