Polümeervahtudel, commonly translated as polymer foams, are materials produced by introducing a gas phase into a polymer matrix. This process results in a lightweight material with a cellular structure, consisting of a large volume of gas trapped within a solid polymer. These foams can be broadly categorized into two main types: closed-cell and open-cell. In closed-cell foams, the gas is contained within discrete, sealed pockets, leading to good thermal and acoustic insulation properties, as well as buoyancy. Physical foaming uses inert gases or volatile liquids that vaporize under heat or pressure changes to create the cell structure. Chemical foaming relies on the decomposition of chemical blowing agents, which release gas when heated.
