Polüetüleen, often abbreviated as PE, is a common thermoplastic polymer derived from ethylene. It is one of the most widely produced plastics in the world, valued for its versatility, affordability, and ease of processing. Polüetüleen exists in various forms, each possessing distinct properties determined by its molecular structure, particularly the degree of branching and molecular weight.

The primary forms include low-density polüetüleen (LDPE), characterized by significant branching, making it flexible, translucent, and tough. High-density polüetüleen (HDPE) has a more linear structure with minimal branching, resulting in a stiffer, stronger, and more opaque material. Linear low-density polüetüleen (LLDPE) offers a balance of flexibility and strength. Ultra-high molecular weight polüetüleen (UHMWPE) boasts exceptional abrasion resistance and impact strength, making it suitable for demanding applications.

Polüetüleen's applications are extensive, spanning from packaging films, bags, and bottles to pipes, containers, toys, and even medical implants. Its chemical inertness makes it resistant to many acids, bases, and solvents, contributing to its widespread use.
