Polytrimetyleen, also known as poly(trimethylene) or polytrimethylene terephthalate in its most common form, is a polyester polymer produced by the condensation of terephthalic acid (or its esters) with 1,3-propanediol (trimethylene glycol). The principal member is poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT). PTT is a semi-crystalline material that can form fibers, films, and molded components.

Compared with polyethylene terephthalate (PET), PTT often offers greater elasticity and bulk, improved dyeability, and strong mechanical properties with good dimensional stability. It maintains chemical resistance and clarity while enabling diverse processing routes. The polymer’s crystallization behavior and processing temperatures make it suitable for textile fibers, carpets, and certain engineering applications.

Production follows standard polyester chemistry: esterification or transesterification of the diacid (or diester) with the diol, followed by polycondensation to form long chains. Catalysts such as antimony oxides or titanium-based systems are commonly used. Melt processing includes extrusion, injection molding, film blowing, and fiber spinning.

Applications include textile fibers and carpets that benefit from bulk, softness, and colorfastness, as well as engineering plastics for molded parts and films. Limitations include higher cost relative to PET, sensitivity to hydrolysis under certain conditions, and a somewhat narrower processing window. Environmental considerations focus on recycling options, including mechanical recycling and chemical recycling to monomers.

Polytrimetyleen also exists in related forms derived from trimethylene diols or carbonate derivatives, but the term most commonly refers to poly(trimethylene terephthalate) used in textiles and engineering applications.
