polysèmes
Polysémie refers to the property of a word or linguistic expression having multiple related meanings. It is a phenomenon found across all languages and is a fundamental aspect of how humans communicate and conceptualize the world. Unlike homonymy, where words have the same spelling and pronunciation but unrelated meanings (e.g., "bank" as a financial institution and "bank" as a river's edge), the meanings of a polysemous word share a common origin or conceptual connection. For example, the word "foot" can refer to a body part, the base of an object, or a unit of measurement, all stemming from the original concept of a limb or a base.
The distinction between polysemy and homonymy can sometimes be subtle and is often debated among linguists.
