Conceptualize is a verb meaning to form a concept or general idea of something, or to create a conceptual model or framework that represents a phenomenon. The term derives from late Latin conceptus, from concept- “that which is taken or received,” with roots in Latin capere “to take.” In British English the spelling is conceptualise; in American English it is conceptualize.

In practice, conceptualization involves identifying essential features, outlining relationships, and organizing knowledge into concepts that can be communicated and tested. In cognitive psychology and information science, it refers to concept formation, mental models, abstraction, and knowledge representation, such as ontologies. In design and research, conceptualization is the initial stage of problem framing and product development, producing a conceptual model, diagrams, or user-story mappings that guide experimentation and implementation.
