Polystyrene expandable, commonly referred to as expandable polystyrene (EPS) or simply "polystyrenexpanderas" in some languages, is a lightweight, rigid, foam plastic composed of the monomer styrene. It is created by suspending polystyrene beads in water and introducing a blowing agent, typically pentane, which expands the beads when heated. This process transforms the solid beads into a lightweight, insulating material with a closed-cell structure.

The production of expandable polystyrene begins with the polymerization of styrene to form solid polystyrene beads. These beads contain a small amount of pentane, which acts as a blowing agent. When heated, the pentane vaporizes, causing the beads to expand to many times their original size. The expanded beads are then molded into various shapes and sizes, such as blocks, sheets, or custom forms, depending on the intended application.

Expandable polystyrene is widely used in packaging, insulation, and manufacturing due to its excellent thermal insulation properties, lightweight nature, and shock-absorbing capabilities. It is commonly found in food packaging (e.g., "Styrofoam" containers), thermal insulation for buildings, and protective packaging for fragile items. However, its use has faced criticism due to environmental concerns, particularly regarding its slow decomposition and potential to release styrene, a chemical linked to health risks.

The material is recyclable, but recycling infrastructure is limited in many regions. Efforts to improve sustainability include the development of EPS recycling programs, the use of bio-based alternatives, and the promotion of reuse and repurposing. Despite these challenges, expandable polystyrene remains a versatile and cost-effective material in various industries.
