Polynomiyhteys, also known as polynomial interpolation, is a method used in mathematics to find a polynomial that passes through a given set of data points. Given a set of n+1 distinct points (x_0, y_0), (x_1, y_1), ..., (x_n, y_n), the goal of polynomial interpolation is to find a unique polynomial P(x) of degree at most n such that P(x_i) = y_i for all i from 0 to n.

There are several methods to achieve polynomial interpolation. One common approach is using the Lagrange interpolation formula. This formula constructs the interpolating polynomial as a weighted sum of the given y-values, where each weight is a polynomial that is 1 at one of the x_i points and 0 at all other x_j points (where j is not equal to i). Another method is the Newton form of the interpolating polynomial, which uses divided differences. This form is often more computationally efficient, especially when adding new data points.

The existence and uniqueness of the interpolating polynomial are guaranteed as long as the x-coordinates of the data points are distinct. However, polynomial interpolation can sometimes lead to undesirable oscillations between data points, especially when dealing with a large number of points or poorly spaced points. This phenomenon is known as Runge's phenomenon. For such cases, piecewise polynomial interpolation, such as spline interpolation, is often preferred as it provides a smoother and more stable approximation.
