Polymerstructure refers to the arrangement of atoms within a polymer and the way repeating units, or monomers, are linked into long chains. In addition to the chemical identity of the monomer, polymer structure is determined by the length of the chain, the sequence of monomers, and the topology of the chain network. The degree of polymerization and molecular weight influence physical properties and behavior.

The primary architecture is linear, branched, or crosslinked. Linear polymers consist of one-dimensional chains; branching introduces side chains; crosslinking creates a network that resists flow. Stereochemistry (tacticity) describes the relative orientation of pendant groups: isotactic, syndiotactic, or atactic, which strongly affects crystallinity and melting temperature. Conformation explores chain geometry (trans, gauche), influencing stiffness and density.

Microstructure includes crystallinity and amorphous regions. Regular sequences promote packing into crystals; irregular sequences yield amorphous glassy regions. The degree of crystallinity and the glass transition temperature determine mechanical properties, permeability, and thermal behavior.

Copolymerization and architectures expand possibilities: homopolymers vs copolymers; block, random, alternating, graft copolymers. Network polymers or thermosets form three-dimensional networks via crosslinking; linear and branched elastomers exhibit elasticity. Understanding polymer structure is essential for predicting properties and designing materials for applications.
