polylaktidi

Polylaktidi is a term encountered in Greek-language scientific literature referring to polymers that incorporate lactic acid units, most commonly poly(lactic acid) (PLA), also known as polylactide in its polymerized form. The word combines poly- with lakt- from lactic acid and the -idi suffix used in some transliterations.

PLA is typically produced by polymerizing lactide, the cyclic dimer of lactic acid, via ring-opening polymerization using catalysts such as tin(II) octoate or other metal catalysts. It can be derived from renewable resources such as corn or sugarcane through fermentation, and exists in at least two stereochemical forms (isolated forms include isotactic PLLA and PDLA, as well as atactic PDLLA), which influence its properties.

PLA is a biodegradable polyester with moderate strength and stiffness, generally transparent. Glass transition temperatures are around 50–60°C for amorphous forms, and melting points around 150–180°C depending on tacticity and crystallinity. It can be manufactured as films, fibers, or 3D printing filaments and finds use in a range of applications.

Used in packaging, disposable tableware, agricultural films, medical devices such as sutures and implants, and drug delivery systems, PLA is widely utilized in additive manufacturing. It is produced from renewable feedstocks and is compostable under industrial conditions; however, home composting is unreliable and end-of-life outcomes depend on waste streams. Limitations include brittleness, relatively low heat resistance, and the need for specialized recycling or composting streams to achieve environmental benefits.
