Polyisocyanurate, often abbreviated as PIR or PUR, is a type of rigid thermosetting plastic foam used primarily for thermal insulation. It is formed through the polymerization of isocyanates and polyols, with a higher proportion of isocyanates compared to standard polyurethane. This chemical difference leads to the formation of isocyanurate rings within the polymer structure, which significantly enhances the material's thermal stability and fire resistance.

PIR foam is produced by mixing these reactive chemicals with a blowing agent, which creates a cellular structure within the foam as it expands and cures. This closed-cell structure traps a gas, often a hydrofluorocarbon or a hydrocarbon, which contributes to its excellent insulating properties. The resulting foam is lightweight, strong, and possesses a low thermal conductivity, making it an effective barrier against heat transfer.

The enhanced fire performance of PIR foam is a key advantage. The isocyanurate rings are more thermally stable than the urethane linkages found in standard polyurethane, meaning PIR foam tends to char rather than melt and drip when exposed to flame. This char layer acts as an insulator, slowing down the spread of fire and reducing the release of flammable gases.
