Polyester material refers to a family of polymers used in textiles, packaging, and engineering plastics, with polyethylene terephthalate (PET) as the most common example. PET is produced by condensation polymerization of terephthalic acid (or dimethyl terephthalate) with ethylene glycol, creating long chains of ester linkages. The polymer can be melt-extruded to form fibers for textiles, or molded and blown into bottles, films, and other components.

In textile form, polyester fibers offer high tensile strength, excellent abrasion resistance, dimensional stability, and strong wrinkle resistance. They are quick-drying and easy to care for, with good dye uptake. Weaker at high-temperature exposure but resistant to many chemicals, PET's properties can be tailored by adding co-polymers or blending with other fibers. Variants include co-polyesters and bio-based polyesters, such as bio-PET, as well as other engineering polyesters like PETG (glycol-modified PET) used for thermoforming and durable plastics.

Common applications include clothing, activewear, home furnishings, and industrial fabrics, along with beverage bottles, food packaging, films, and components in electronics or automotive parts. Recycled PET (rPET) is widely used to produce new bottles, fibers, and packaging, contributing to circular economy approaches.

Environmental considerations: polyester is not biodegradable, and production can be energy-intensive. Waste streams pose challenges, including microplastic release during washing. Recycling methods—mechanical reprocessing of fibers, and chemical recycling to monomers—help mitigate environmental impact and enable bottle-to-bottle or fiber-to-fiber recycling. Proper care and end-of-life management are important to maximize sustainability of polyester materials.
