A polycyst is a medical term describing a cyst that is part of a larger group of cysts. The most common association with the term polycyst is polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). These polycysts are a hallmark of the condition, though the presence of polycysts alone does not confirm a PCOS diagnosis. Other medical conditions can also involve the development of multiple cysts in various organs. For example, polycystic kidney disease is a genetic disorder characterized by the growth of numerous cysts in the kidneys, which can impair kidney function over time.

The formation of polycysts can stem from various underlying causes, including hormonal imbalances, genetic predispositions, or developmental abnormalities. Diagnosis typically involves medical imaging techniques such as ultrasound, CT scans, or MRI, along with clinical evaluation and sometimes blood tests to assess hormone levels. Treatment strategies depend entirely on the specific condition causing the polycysts and may range from watchful waiting to medications or surgical interventions to manage symptoms and prevent complications.
