Polyacrylonitrile, often abbreviated as PAN, is a synthetic polymer with the formula (C3H3N)n. It is a thermoplastic plastic known for its high strength, stiffness, and excellent resistance to chemicals and weathering. PAN is produced through the polymerization of acrylonitrile monomer. It typically appears as a white, opaque solid.

The primary application of polyacrylonitrile is as a precursor for carbon fibers. When PAN is heated in the absence of air, it undergoes a process called carbonization, transforming it into carbon fibers. These carbon fibers are exceptionally strong and lightweight, making them valuable in industries such as aerospace, automotive, and sporting goods. PAN is also used in the production of acrylic fibers, which are employed in textiles for clothing, carpets, and upholstery due to their softness, warmth, and resistance to shrinking and wrinkling. Additionally, PAN finds use in membranes for water purification and in certain types of adhesives and coatings. Its thermal stability and chemical inertness contribute to its versatility in these diverse applications.
