Polyakryylamidit, often abbreviated as PAM, are synthetic polymers with the chemical formula (C3H5NO)n. They are formed by the polymerization of acrylamide monomers. Polyacrylamides are known for their high molecular weight and their ability to form gels or viscous solutions. Their properties can be modified by altering the degree of polymerization and by introducing charged groups into the polymer chain, resulting in anionic, cationic, or nonionic forms.

These polymers find widespread applications due to their unique characteristics. In water treatment, they are used as flocculants to aid in the separation of solids from liquids. In the oil and gas industry, polyacrylamides are employed in enhanced oil recovery processes to increase the viscosity of injection water, thereby improving the sweep efficiency of the oil. They are also used in mining operations for tailings dewatering and in the paper industry as retention and drainage aids.

In biological and biochemical research, modified polyacrylamides are crucial for gel electrophoresis, a technique used to separate molecules based on size and charge. Polyacrylamide gels provide a matrix through which molecules migrate under an electric field. Due to the potential toxicity of acrylamide monomer, strict controls are in place for their production and handling, and the final polymerized polyacrylamide products are generally considered safe for their intended applications.
