poly3HB
Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate), often abbreviated as P3HB, is a naturally occurring polyester produced by numerous microorganisms as a way to store carbon and energy reserves. It belongs to the larger family of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), which are biodegradable and biocompatible polyesters. P3HB is synthesized intracellularly by bacteria when nutrients are abundant but growth is limited. Under nutrient-depleted conditions, the bacteria can depolymerize P3HB to obtain energy.
The chemical structure of P3HB consists of repeating units of 3-hydroxybutyric acid linked by ester bonds.
Research into P3HB has focused on its potential applications in various fields. Its biocompatibility and biodegradability
