Poloxalene is a veterinary anti-foaming agent used to prevent and treat frothy bloat in cattle and other ruminants. It is a non-ionic surfactant composed of block copolymers of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide (polyoxyethylene–polyoxypropylene). By lowering surface tension at the ruminal gas–liquid interface, poloxalene destabilizes stable foams and promotes gas escape, reducing the risk of life-threatening bloat on lush pastures.

Poloxalene is typically included in feed or supplied as a drench or paste, and is administered orally according to label directions. It is used prophylactically in animals at risk of frothy bloat and can be employed as a therapeutic aid in mild cases under veterinary guidance. It is not a substitute for rapid veterinary intervention in severe bloating.

Regulatory status and safety: Poloxalene is approved as an anti-foaming feed additive in many countries, including the United States, where it is regulated by the FDA for use in ruminants. When used per directions, it generally has a favorable safety profile; adverse effects are uncommon and may include gastrointestinal upset with improper dosing or administration.
