Polivinilklorür, commonly known as PVC, is a widely used synthetic plastic polymer. Its chemical formula is (C2H3Cl)n. PVC is the third most widely produced synthetic plastic polymer globally, after polyethylene and polypropylene. It is produced by the polymerization of vinyl chloride monomer (VCM).

PVC exists in two main forms: rigid (uPVC) and flexible. The rigid form is typically used in construction for applications such as pipes, window profiles, siding, and roofing membranes. It is durable, cost-effective, and resistant to chemicals and corrosion. The flexible form of PVC is made plasticized by adding plasticizers, which increase its flexibility and durability. This flexible form is used in electrical cable insulation, inflatable products, medical devices, and flooring.

The production of PVC involves several steps, starting with the extraction of salt and ethylene. These are processed to produce VCM, which is then polymerized to form PVC resin. The properties of PVC can be modified by adding various additives, such as stabilizers, plasticizers, fillers, and colorants, to achieve desired characteristics for specific applications. While PVC offers many benefits in terms of durability and versatility, concerns have been raised regarding its environmental impact, particularly related to its production and disposal, due to the presence of chlorine.
