Politiikat is a Finnish term that refers to courses of action, principles, and guidelines adopted by governments, organizations, or institutions to guide decisions and actions. In everyday use, it often denotes public policy, but it can also describe internal governance policies, regulatory frameworks, and strategic priorities. The word poli- stems from the broader concept of politik, with roots in Swedish politik and ultimately in the French politique.

Policies can be formal or informal, written as documents or embedded in laws, regulations, or organizational rules. They set objectives, define permissible actions, assign responsibilities, and establish criteria for evaluation. Public policy, for example, encompasses areas such as education policy, tax policy, health policy, and climate policy, while corporate or institutional policies cover data privacy, code of conduct, information security, and risk management.

The policy process typically follows a cycle that includes agenda setting, policy formulation, adoption or decision, implementation, and evaluation. Stakeholders such as government agencies, lawmakers, businesses, experts, non-governmental organizations, and citizens influence each stage. Analysts and researchers may conduct impact assessments or cost-benefit analyses to inform choices, and policy documents are often accompanied by guidelines, budgets, and monitoring mechanisms.

Politiikat shape resource allocation, legal norms, and everyday practices, reflecting the values and priorities of a society or organization. They are dynamic, adapting to new information, technologies, and changing conditions. Challenges in policy work include balancing trade-offs, ensuring equity and transparency, managing uncertainty, and coordinating across different actors and levels of government.
